Suffering from Eczema? *
Supporting your Gut Health can be Key to Relief!
Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is an itchy inflammation of the skin that results in a red, itchy rash. The skin becomes dry and damaged, leaving it with little protection against allergens, which then initiate inflammation and thus the itching. Acute lesions are composed of many small fluid-filled structures called vesicles that usually reside on red, swollen skin. When these vesicles break, fluid leaks out, causing characteristic weeping and oozing. In the majority of cases, the itching is worse at night, making it difficult to sleep.
If you are plagued with eczema, you know how frustrating and debilitating this condition can be. You try everything – creams, lotions and potions – but to no avail. Could it be that these ‘fixes’ are not getting to the root of the problem?
Think about 2 possible root causes – the skin is a major organ of elimination and so it would make sense that improving elimination would improve the health of the skin. When you also consider that certain conditions like herpes, canker sores and skin cancer is the result of a weakened immune system then it would also make sense to support the body’s immune system.
Here’s a lesson on the physiology: When the flora in your gut and the intestinal lining become damaged from Rx drugs, antibiotics, sugary and processed foods, etc., the result is dysbiosis (or the overgrowth of harmful bacteria).
This can now cause your immune system to become damaged and compromised. Your immune system has two divisions known as T-cell type 1 and T-cell type 2. Type 1 serves as a barrier to infection and invasion anywhere the body comes in contact with the outside world, such as through the skin and mucous membranes. But when you develop dysbiosis (abnormal gut flora), this system is weakened thus letting foreign microbes and toxins enter your body. Your body now tries to defend itself from these invaders and responds by over-stimulating the T-cell type 2, producing biochemical substances such as IgE, which is the master of allergic reactions.
So there you have it! T-cell type 1 is underactive (barrier is down) which causes T-cell type 2 to kick into high gear (biochemical allergic reactions) and you end up with chronic viral infections, allergies, candidiasis, asthma and eczema!
So if you suffer from chronic eczema, it would be wise to repair the gut by normalizing the flora and giving it what it needs to bring back a healthy and normal flora. Only then will you be able to finally balance your immune system, turn up your T-cell type 1 (barrier) and turn off the T-cell type 2 (stimulation of allergic reactions).
